Show Spoiler

a5c7b9f00b By the mid-21st Century, humankind has colonized the oceans and formed the UEO–the United Earth Oceans–as a military organization to police it. Formerly a high-ranking member of the UEO, Nathan Bridger retired after the death of his wife, and retreated to an isolated island to study dolphins. An attempt is made to hijack the Seaquest DSV, the UEO's most powerful undersea vessel, and Nathan–its original designer–is convinced to return to active service, to assume command of it. His second in command is Cmdr. Jonathan Ford. In second season, the DSV added Dagwood, a prototype GELF (Genetically Engineered Life Form), Tony Piccolo, a man with surgically implanted gills, and Dr. Wendy Smith, a telepath/empath, to its crew of specialists. The series has New Age leanings, often presenting stories that deal with environmental issues or mix myth and mysticism–from ghosts to "gods"–into its science fiction.
In the early 21st century, mankind has colonized the oceans. The United Earth Oceans Organization enlists Captain Nathan Bridger and the submarine seaQuest DSV to keep the peace and explore the last frontier on Earth.
It is with deep regret that I see yet another brilliant SciFi series that was brutally axed by the powers that be, because it did not make the ratings. For more than forty years producers and studios have been making the same mistake. A decent SciFi series take a while to get going, and be appreciated. Let's face it, "Star Trek" was a flop the first time round, and was axed because it did not make the numbers, fortunately, it was given a second chance and a new life. "SeaQuest DSV" has not been so lucky, and along with "Crusade", "Space - Above & Beyond", "FarScape" and "Earth Star Voyager", lays broken and incomplete. The producers, directors and studios need to realise that SciFi is intellectual and projective, and will almost never be appreciated by the ratings majority, and these programmes need to treated as an investment in the future of entertainment. They need to be allowed to run and complete, and grow at their own pace. Oh yes, the only reason that I gave SeaQuest a rating of 9, rather than a perfect 10, was because of the discontinuity in the episodes. Particularly the sudden reappearance of Luetenent Brody, who was previously killed in action.
It's hard to describe just how titanically awful this show was. We must confess that we were inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt for awhile, but the insanely Politically Correct "Cheeseburger" episode finally sank this one for us. Roy Scheider evidently knew when it was time to bail;

too bad none of the other principles did. With the sole exception of Michael Ironside ( who at least got other relatively high profile jobs ) everyone else on this seadog went down with the ship. Speaking of which, the buzz at the time was that the producers originally wanted the "SeaQuest DSV" to resemble the "Enterprise" on "Star Trek"! What outstanding hydrodynamic qualities that would have had! As it was, the sub eventually wound up looking rather like a gigantic squid, which is at least somewhat believable, except for the MagLev trams that the crew used to get around this monstrosity, and the grating "Thank you for riding MagLev" canned voice whenever the tram stopped. That wasn't very believable. Beyond question, the most irritating character on the show, besides Darwin the dolphin, was The Kid. WHY do producers feel the need to include such supercilious characters like this? Wesley Crusher was bad enough, but this one. . .sheesh, give it a rest awready. Like "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", this show soon degenerated into one absurd storyline after another including, in a desperate and rather obvious attempt to boost sagging ratings, that old standby: THE ALIENS HAVE LANDED!!!!! Ya know what? By that time, nobody cared. Another Spielberg PC small-screen catastrophe that should be purged from your memory banks. Feh.

In the third season premiere, the SeaQuest reappears, with most of its crew intact, ten years after their abduction at the end of season two. Captain Bridger retires to raise his new grandson, and Michael Ironside joins the cast as the more militaristic Captain Oliver Hudson, bringing along his "best student", Lieutenant J.J. Fredericks, who serves as seaQuest's ace sub-fighter pilot.
